Review The Perfect Summer Movie DVD - Family Friendly Film for Kids to Enjoy into Fall

If you’re missing the lazy days of summer and looking for some home entertainment that’s family friendly and easily watchable for a family with young kids, this is a great pick. From a purely adult perspective, though, let it be made clear that The Perfect Summer is far from being a perfect movie, and may not be what you’re looking for if you’re an avid and attentive movie viewer.

The plot revolves around a 17 year-old (Adam Horner) and his mom (Sydney Penny), both whom are moving to a beach town after some sort of divorce or dispute with the father. Mom makes it her priority to help her son through the transition, since he is anything but a beach boy. 

As the movie progresses we are introduced to the slew of enemies and friends of the main character, giving us a very clear understanding of who is and isn’t out to make this new kid's life easy. He and his mom live with her father (Eric Roberts), who is later revealed to be a legendary surfer who quits due to alcoholism. After seeing how difficult it is for the main character to fit in, grandpa offers to teach him how to surf, which ends up being the young man's main motivation for trying to make his life happen in this small beach town.

The plot, while sweet and heartwarming, is nothing spectacular. With that said, however, it is easy to follow and would probably be most appealing to tweens. What I found most unsettling about this movie were the actors. The main character is painfully boring and lacks depth of personality, the girl he crushes on in the film is just another objectified woman who is fought over, and there was even a kid with a fake quasi-Jamaican accent. 

This film falls short in a number of ways for mature audiences. On the upside, it could work as “light reading” for kids and feel-good-film junkies. If you just need to relax, and your kids are eager to watch something on TV, this wholesome film can be a simple substitute to keep everyone distracted for the hour and a half that it runs.

To sum it up: “The Perfect Summer”, Not Quite Perfect.
