60+ Hrs Old Fashioned Family Home Entertainment
As kids many of us grew up in the living room or den enjoying classic movies on television or cable with our parents and siblings. A Baby Boomer myself, I still can remember being mesmerized by Hollywood legends like Shirley Temple, John Wayne, Abbott & Costello, Charlton Heston, Elizabeth Taylor, Laurel & Hardy and lots of other world-class performers.
Unfortunately for today's youth, it's not as easy to find that same quality and quantity of old-fashioned morality, culture and virtue building in today's entertainment fare. Thankfully Mill Creek Entertainment has some new 12-piece boxed family-friendly DVD collections of 50 movies each that make it possible as well as affordable for children to have access to the same vintage features enjoyed by previous generations.
Each of the two Mill Creek movie sets reviewed in this post is centered around a unique historical period and theme. Timeless Family Classics includes a total run time of just under 63 hours while the The Nifty Fifties boasts slightly over 65 and a half hours of entertainment.
What each historically important collection has in common with the other, though, is that it is comprised predominantly of black and white family friendly classic pictures with just a handful of color movies that largely predate the necessity of the modern day rating system.

Timeless Family Classics reaches in time all the way back to the early 1921 silent film The Kid starring Charlie Chaplin and includes some of the most beloved movies from Hollywood's Golden Age in every decade from the 1920s to the early 1970s. Just about every important big screen performer or famous duo is represented in these films from Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Carole Lombard and Gary Cooper to Bob Hope, John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, and Ginger Rogers to Laurel & Hardy and Abbott & Costello The most modern movie in this set is Against A Crooked Sky from 1975 which is one of the few pictures in color in that collection.
In contrast, The Nifty Fifties focuses exclusively on the fabulous 1950s with films from every year between 1950 and 1958 -- a period when rock and roll music and television was taking the nation's popular culture by storm. Here you'll recognize the names that are synonymous with that time frame: Boris Karloff, Charlton Heston, Fred MacMurray, Gregory Peck, Lloyd Bridges, Eddie Albert, and Bing Crosby among the leading men. With films starring some of the best known actresses of the day, too, including Marilyn Monroe, The Hilton Sisters, Loretta Young, Angela Lansbury, Eva Gabor, the Dame herself, Elizabeth Taylor, and others. And, what would any 50s retrospective be without a Lassie film? In this case the world's most famous canine star appears in The Painted Hills (1951) which is included in the set.
Timeless Family Classics and The Nifty Fifties are priced at the unbelievably low price of just $29.98 MSRP each, not including shipping.
