Best of 2009 Showcase - Perfect Thanksgiving Gifts

by Janis Brett Elspas
MommyBlogExpert's Best of 2009 Showcase - Perfect Thanksgiving Gifts features the most brilliant ideas imaginable for kids, families, parents, other relatives, and friends.  From a child's teepee to novel games adults and kids will enjoy playing together on Thanksgiving Day, to some particularly thoughtful gifts for the host/hostess for the kitchen, family table, and the home,  chances are you'll find the perfect gift to enhance the holiday.  Pictured at left are two of our triplets inside the Highlands Tee Pee by Jackson Madeleine.

Something unique and magical happens at Thanksgiving that brings children and adults, young, middle age, and old, and family and friends together, like no other holiday of the year in America.  It's often the season when many look forward to quality time with loved ones who will gather to celebrate.  But if you're like me, it's also prompts some hard thinking about what to bring to avoid arriving empty-handed at the big feast.

In years past, many of us have brought pumpkin pies, bottles of wine, turkey adorned paper plates & napkins, or other traditional gifts to our hosts and hostesses.  This year, instead, consider breaking with convention and bring a gift that is truly novel, something that will be remembered long after the last piece of pie is consumed, the final bottle of wine is emptied, and you have bid your hosts goodbye.

Thanksgiving Fantasy Gifts
The Highlands Tee Pee, by Jackson Madeleine, is crafted of Sunbrella Fabric making it suitable for use inside or outdoors.  This beats any other childhood hideaway hands down and the lucky children who receive it will be enchanted by its  6’ 4” tall, 5’ wide sizeThe ultimate fantasy fall and winter gift, available exclusively from the Taigan online boutique. Fairy Houses Everywhere by Barry & Tracy Kane is a beautifully-photographed coffee table conversation book intended to inspire its readers to join the craze and design/build their own whimsical fairy mansion or cottage constructed strictly of natural materials.  The inside jacket cover says, "Build a Fairy House and celebrate the child within you," so this is something wonderful that has the potential to bridge multiple generations.  Winner of 10 prestigious awards, this book from The Fairy Houses Series is available direct from Light-Beams Publishing and at select bookstores.  Watch Mommy Blog Expert for an in-depth book review of this title soon.  $14.95

Adopt-A-Turkey.org is a fantasy for many birds destined for the dinner table.  But if you love animals like I do, you can make saving a turkey's life a reality by "adopting" one of these personable creatures for yourself or other family member, a friend, or even a child.  Farm Sanctuary  facilitates this year-round program which simply involves making a small tax-deductible donation, offering the public the chance to sponsor a bird from one of their turkey flocks living out their natural lives on either of their two farms in Watkins Glen, NY or Orland, CA.  In exchange, this gift provides the giver and receiver with the peace of mind of knowing that a turkey who might have otherwise been headed to a sadly predictable fate before rescue, will be cared for by Farm Sanctuary for the rest of his/her life.  An added bonus: An adoption certificate and photo of the turkey chosen will be given to the donor or designated gift recipient. For more info and/or to adopt a turkey, click here  $25

Globe Cage Bird Feeder makes sure the little winged friends who visit backyards in every season aren't forgotten, either, because it allows small birds to dine safely away from bullying large birds like jays and crows.  The openings on this stylish feeding refuge are just right for finches and other tiny ones and the latch top stays firm to help keep burglar squirrels out of your birdseed. Sturdily built, this gift to nature holds 1-1/2 lbs. of sunflower seeds.  Available online from Gardenerssupply.com  and at Gardener's Supply Company's  two Vermont retail locationsWatch Mommy Blog Expert for an in-depth product review of this item shortly.  $24.99

Burn Cream MD is recommended by great chefs like Mario Batali & Emeril Lagasse.  A eye-opening host/hostess gift everyone loves to receive "just in case" but hopefully no will have to use.  This burn cream -- packaged in bright red -- was developed by a medical school student who became a dermatologist.  According to Burn Cream MD the product soothes the burn and promotes fast healing and comes either boxed in packets of 10 or as a 2.5 oz. pump dispenser.  The company's brochure states this was tested extensively in professional kitchens for two years as even the experts are prone to burn accidents every once in awhile.  Available direct from BurnCreamMD.com  Watch Mommy Blog Expert for a giveaway as well as an in-depth product review on this item later in the holiday season, after I have tried this out -- because every year I seem to manage to get a burn or two while cooking.  $17.99/Box of 10 Packets; $29.99/Pump Dispenser

PRODUCT REVIEW - Fairytale Brownies, Proof That Dreams Really Can Come True

by Janis Brett Elspas
Note:  Inspiration for this blogpost comes as I savor another one of the scrumptious chocolate samples Fairytale Brownies sent me recently.

Before moving to California, I lived in Arizona, home state of Fairytale Brownies.  Recently, I heard that these gourmet chocolate morsels made in Phoenix  -- the same ones I'd ordered in gift boxes for years on the Internet for my mom who always raved about them -- had started selling retail for the first time on the West Coast in the Gelson's market about a mile from where I now live.  This was not lucky coincidence, it was a real-live fantasy come true.

This story gets increasingly better and tastier, too.  As I investigated further, I discovered not only that both Fairytale's original and walnut flavor brownies are now available in and around the Los Angeles metro area, but you can walk into any of 17 Gelson's markets throughout Southern California -- from Dana Point north to Westlake Village -- and buy either of these varieties in a one pound attractive ready-to-give tray or in 3 inch squares that are individually wrapped, reasonably priced at $9.99 and $2.39 respectively.

According to Alyssa Andrews, sales and public relations for Fairytale, the brand is already doing well in the L.A. area and it hopes that Gelson's will consider adding some of the other brownie flavors to add to the ones customers are already enjoying.

The products now selling in Gelson's are pictured throughout this blogpost product review.  The brownie trays shown are perfect for bringing as a host/hostess gift for Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, and other holidays; they are also well-received presents for birthdays and all special occasions. Fairytale Brownies' individually wrapped squares are also an excellent option for those seeking one person servings and are perfect for popping into kids' lunch boxes and also for adults who'd like a special little indulgence for themselves or someone special.

Come to think of it, it's no surprise that Fairytale and Gelson's chose each other for this yummy partnership.  I've shopped at Gelson's before in my adopted city, and as already mentioned, have bought Fairytale Brownies by mail order, too.  Based on the actual taste test my family did of the line carried in Gelson's and those experiences, I can honestly say that both companies are committed to offering fine products that are not only reasonably-priced, but also backed by superior customer service, a rare combination in today's tough economic climate where others in-store and online are cutting back on quality, service, or both, to keep prices low.

And, to think the real-life Fairytale Brownies modern-day American success story all began much like this original fairytale ...

A Modern Brownie Fairytale*

Once upon a time, just about 50 years ago in a town in Massachusetts, there lived a nice Jewish mother with her dear hubbie and children.

This busy balabusta asked for a friend's brownie recipe so she could make this treat for her own family.  As the story goes, the friend left out a single ingredient in the instructions so when mom made her first batch, it didn’t taste like the original recipe.  Mom kept experimenting to recreate her friend's rendition of this quintessential American treat.  After many attempts -- finally, lo and behold out of her oven popped the most magical brownies anyone had ever tasted or smelled.

As time passed, the family moved to Arizona but this didn't stop her from continuing to bake the recipe that she had finally perfected.  It wasn't long until she became known for miles around -- among kids and kid-like adults -- for the most delectable enchanted sweet delights one could imagine.   People came from near and far to enjoy these brownies, but it was her youngest child, a three-year old son, who loved them most.

Soon this young lad (pictured: David Kravetz at three years old in mom's kitchen) and a friend he played with on the school playground concocted a plan  -- perhaps inspired by the beloved classic Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory -- to one day build a giant brownie bakery.

All of a sudden there was a flash of a fairy's twinkling wand, then darkness.

"Don't be afraid," the fairy assured them.  "We've just been magically fast-forwarded ahead to modern time."

Before they knew it these kids were now grown-ups with a special childlike-affinity for brownies.  Then, slowly they realized together that the darkness before them was not really black and wasn't scary at all.  A familiar fragrance in the air warmed their senses and they saw a thick rich brown substance appear before their brightened eyes that was also chocolate-sweet in smell.  All of a sudden, both this pretty lady and handsome man were peeking into a giant mixing bowl filled almost to the brim with a fresh batch of batter that soon would be baked into brownies.

At that very moment, the two smiled in unison.  This was no dream, this was reality.  So, they both lived happily ever after, and so did Fairytale Brownies, the best-smelling business around.

*A Modern Brownie Fairytale, an original tale by Janis Brett Elspas of MommyBlogExpert, is based on the true story of Nancy and her son David Kravetz (pictured below, circa 1995), who along with his childhood friend Eileen Spitalny (pictured above, together in 1992), all had their fingers in the batter of the true story of how Fairytale Brownies arose like a phoenix in the desert -- in Phoenix, Arizona -- to become one of the most well-known businesses among brownie connoisseurs everywhere.

The complete line of Fairytale Brownies -- all made with imported Callebaut Chocolate from Belgium, creamery butter, farm fresh eggs, and other fresh ingredients that are free of preservatives -- are available for purchase online in a dozen different flavors on the company’s website.  An assortment of packaging arrangements are available exclusively online, including some with other tasty items such as coffee, presented in attractive gift baskets.

Select items are also available for retail purchase in Gelson's in Southern California, at Costco in the San Francisco Bay Area, at AJ's stores in Phoenix, Arizona, and various gourmet specialty markets in Florida, Maryland, Texas, and Virginia.  For information on purchasing at retail locations or to order  online visit Fairytale Brownies.

Mommy Bloggers - Let's Take a Stand for What is Right

by Janis Brett Elspas

Note:  As you read, keep in mind that this blogpost is the work of a now full-time mommy blogger.  My perspective  also draws from the personal knowledge and experience I've acquired over several prior decades of working in agency PR, corporate communications, and as a journalist for traditional media.

This is MommyBlogExpert's response to the November 15, 2009 Los Angeles Times story titled Blogging Moms Wooed By Food Firms

Since the L.A. Times story does allow you to email the writers a private comment put doesn’t allow one the option to post a public comment directly to the above mentioned article, I am posting here on this blog.  Mommy blog bashing is getting way out of hand, and 5 Minutes for Mom (who was quoted in that story) hits it right, when she says that traditional media may feel their own positions are in jeopardy.

To think: the media fears they may be dethroned — gasp — by a bunch of us moms that give our honest opinions about products they've actually tested personally and feel they want to share with others. There’s a good chance too that all this animosity toward moms who blog has also been aggravated by the jealousy of some bloggers that have not been invited into corporate inner mommy circles. If you really think about it, it’s just silly child’s play.  Since when is sharing/recommending things you like to other families such a crime? Or if you don’t like something what’s the matter with telling others what you really think about a product?

As long as mommy bloggers are abiding by full disclosure of how those products were obtained that they are commenting about, they have done nothing wrong. Sure, there are some unethical mommy bloggers, but I’d say it’s likely that the majority of us have always acted with only good intentions. Few if any mommy bloggers contribute currency or a paycheck to their households with these products and trips they “earn” for spending their time writing reviews and for sometimes being away from their families for days at a time.

It’s also important to point out, that personal styles of mommy blogging vary, as much as the personalities of the women that they represent. For example, personally, I don’t make it my purpose to bombard bad products with bad publicity, because everyone knows what happens when you give a child attention when they are acting badly – it just escalates the negative behavior. When I do product reviews, based on something my family tries and benefits from, I always start by looking for the positive attributes – just like a parent builds their child’s self esteem by focusing on the good. But, to be as objective as possible, I also look at the product as a whole when assessing it and I have no problem of touching on any concerns I might have or suggestions on how to make the product even better if I believe there is information consumers ought to know.

BTW I am one of the earlier signers to the voluntary disclosure pledge established by BlogWithIntegrity a group that was active months before the FTC announced mandatory blogging guidelines that go into effect on December 1, 2009.

In conclusion, mommy bloggers are playing an increasingly important role in consumer product marketing as much as they are in consumer advocacy.  As moms who blog about information that's ultimately important to consumers, we should stand up together for what we believe is right.

Mommy bloggers just might be on the cusp of impacting some real changes in the social media landscape.  Maybe that’s not such a bad thing after all.

Anyone who is pregnant or already is a mom should care about this topic because we either know from experience and/or know someone else who has had a premature baby (or babies, if multiples) with potentially serious health problems.

As a mom of triplets and another child born within a year, who are now Tweens, not a day goes by when I don't stop to think about the miracle of birth.  Thank G-d for me, my oldest child, as well as my triplets (the later who were born a few weeks early) all came home from the hospital in less than a week, healthy.

Unfortunately, as March of Dimes point out, too many newborns are not so lucky.  "Every year 20 million babies are born too soon, too small and very sick ― half a million of them in the United States," this high profile organization reminds us.  "November 17 is when we fight.  The rate of premature birth has never been higher. In half the cases, we simply don’t understand what went wrong. We need to fight for answers. And, ultimately, preventions."

November 17 is dedicated to raising awareness of the crisis of premature birth through blogging.  The March of Dimes invites bloggers like you to get involved.  I hope you will join me in this valiant battle to make a difference in the lives of unborn children.  For more information see the special site set up by March Of Dimes  To sign up to join other women in spreading this important message see this post on Twittermoms

Why Our Family Volunteers -- Especially Between Thanksgiving and January 1st
My own family -- DH, all four kids (including triplets, plus one more all born within a year) and I -- have been volunteering for Big Sunday, an awesome non-profit that involves 30,000+ volunteers each year, annually since our now-tweens were 3 years old.  We've always helped at both the Nov/Dec holiday volunteer projects and every May for the original Big Sunday.  Thanks to our involvement with this organization, we've helped with many different community projects, including packing holiday care packages for the homeless, decorating a big hall for a Christmas dinner for the homeless, walking dogs at Boxer Rescue of So. Calif, and painting the stables at a Horse therapeutic riding center, just to name a few.  The pictures in this post show my family helping on various volunteer projects.

We've also written letters to U.S. troops to show our support, made potholders for the solar cookers used by the people of Darfur, and made cards and flower arrangements which we delivered to residents of old age homes.  We'll be there again both to help out around Thanksgiving and for all the December holidays -- it feels so good to give back to the community we live in and our kids are learning to help others naturally, not as something they are forced to do.

Please leave a comment if you know of other holiday community volunteer opportunities, giving us the link and we will be happy to add it to this list.

And most important - Bookmark this site and keep checking back as I hope to add many more volunteer projects from across the U.S. and will post details, time permitting.

2 cups of vanilla ice cream, softened
1/3 cup of canned pumpkin filling

Shot of rum (optional, but very tasty)

Mix everything in blender till frothy, then pour in 2 glasses, add whipped cream and a sprinkle on nutmeg.

This is heaven, enjoy!

Thanksgiving Dog

Great ideas for teachers for the classroom, too, that don't involve expensive supplies.  Bookmark this page and keep checking back, as  new ideas will be added to this list up till Thanksgiving.

Enjoy some time baking and decorating cookies throughout fall throughThanksgiving.  I made these cookies (see picture below) with my own children using the basic Sugar Cookie recipe out of my antique 1950s Betty Crocker cookbook that my mom made for me when I was a little girl.

I found it similar to tge old-fashioned sugar cookie recipe created by Martha Stewart.  Then, we decorated them with Martha Stewart's Royal Icing Recipe which uses meringue power (dry egg whites) that harden like the fancy giant decorated cookies I've seen selling for upwards of $18 each.

Sugar Cookie Leaves Pumpkins Acorns

Equipment used to make these cookies include my solid maple wood rolling pin that I've had since before I was married.  The pumpkins are made with a large tin vintage cutter from my own collection, while the maple and oak leaves and acorns were cut from the Wilton 9-piece Leaves & Acorns Cookie Cutter Set available on Amazon.

I also used a variety of decorating tools like pastry bags, an assortment of tips, and color gels made by Chefmaster and Wilton, as well as sprinkles and edible confetti by DecACake and CakeMate.

If A Tween Can Make Homemade Ravioli, You Can Too!

As you will see from the pictures throughout this post, my son shows you how EASY it is to make homemade ravioli from scratch for a family of six, including in our case, triplets.

If this boy can do this with such ease, I'm willing to bet you moms and dads might be able to have just as much fun making this Italian specialty for your own family.  Or, better yet, let your kid make this for you, like mine did.  Besides ending up with a delicious, healthy, and homemade authentic dish, another plus to having your child do the ravioli making is that it will keep at least one of your children busy so he can't cause trouble with the other kids in your household before dinner.

What's even more amazing about this ravioli making adventure is that the kid is doing it with a hand crank vintage pasta maker (not one of those fancy expensive electronic ones).  And the story gets better still.  This particular son loves kitchen gadgets and thrift and antique shops equally so naturally it was he who discovered this gorgeous 1960s vintage (but never used) stainless steel pasta maker, made in Italy, in the dusty back room of an antique store in Tucson, Arizona which even came with complete directions, all in Italian!  He prefers kitchen items that are simple in design, so I was thrilled to pay just $15 to buy this gadget for him which makes not only ravioli, but fettuccine, angel hair, and regular spaghetti, as well.

The wonderful treasure has only has a few parts, so it is easy for you-know-who to clean it (that would be mom who is always picking up kitchen messes).  BTW, I bought the old tin cookie cutter you see here for 25 cents in Canada last summer (part of a set of three graduated circle cutters that are also excellent for making cookies and donuts) to add to his growing collection of old-fashioned kitchen contraptions that often are more fun to use than their modern descendants.

Any recipes meant for a pasta machine (and also the filling and sauce) can be used to make your ravioli, but wanted to share the directions my son used since we spent much effort translating it not only from the original Italian into English but also to convert all ingredients from the metric system into measurements in common use in U.S. kitchens.

RAVIOLI w/ Ricotta Cheese and Chopped Spinach
Served with Roasted Garlic Pasta Sauce

Pasta Recipe - Ricetta Base Per Pasta Fatta In Casa
Don't panic, making this is not as hard as these words are to pronounce. The recipe used for the pasta translated into English simply means Basic Recipe for Homemade Pasta and requires only two ingredients flour and eggs.  To make enough pasta for 6 people (including 4 hungry tweens) he used 2-1/2 cups flour and 4 slightly-beaten eggs following these steps:

1.  Carefully pour the flour onto a wood cutting board creating a small mound, then hollow out the center slightly like the crater of a volcano and pour the eggs into it.

2.  Using a fork slowly blend in a little flour into the egg at a time into the hole in the center being carefully not to break down the wall of the mound to avoid the liquid spilling off.

3.  After most of flour is blended knead by hand into a soft ball working for about 5 minutes. Let the dough rest for about 1/2 hour.

4. Then using the floured cutting board & a wooden rolling pin, flatten part of the dough into a sheet  (working with a small piece at a time) until is flat enough to fit through the thickest setting on your pasta maker, then repeat cranking pasta through progressively thinner settings until you reach the desired thickness of pasta sheets. See the directions with your pasta maker for the exact way to do this as settings vary greatly on both hand crank and electronic machines.

5. Using a circular tin cookie cutter cut out circles to the desired size you want, making a top and bottom the same size for each ravioli. Put a small spoonful of the cheese spinach mixture (see recipe below) in the center of each bottom circle and then place a top circle of pasta on each ravioli and apply gentle pressure around edges to seal (dip fingers in water before doing this).

6.  Bring large pot of water to rolling boil and add desired salt. Then, gently add raviolis to the boiling water and cook until they rise to the top (about 5 minutes) being sure to stir carefully to be sure they don't stick. Lift from water with slotted spoon and serve with spaghetti sauce (your own homemade, or do as my son has and use a jar of premium chunky style sauce of your choice).

Filling - Ricotta Cheese & Spinach
2 cups of fresh spinach chopped (or 1 box of frozen chopped spinach)
2 cups of ricotta cheese
1/2 cup of grated Romano or Parmesan Cheese
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 Tablespoon fresh chopped parsley
Salt & pepper (optional)

1. Heat frying pan without any oil and saute on medium heat until most of the liquid from the spinach has evaporated (about 5-10 minutes, depending on the spinach). Be sure to keep mixing with a wooden spoon so it doesn't stick and saute till dry.
2. In a small bowl mix the ricotta cheese, Romano or Parmesan, egg, and chopped parsley together; add salt and pepper to taste as desired.
3. Follow directions above to assemble ravioli using this filling.
4. Don't forget to offer Merlot or Chianti to the adults eating this wonderful dish.

Buon appetito!
(Enjoy your meal)
